BBC Winterwatch 2017

Live from the RSPB Arne reserve, this year’s BBC Winterwatch takes a look at some of the UK’s most stunning wildlife. Spread across five episodes, starting at 8pm on Monday night, there have been a few hints from the Winterwatch 2017 trailer (click the image below), which features native UK birds such as the Robin and Song thrush, as well as the visiting Waxwing.

The BBC is often quite secretive about the information it releases with regard to Winterwatch, but what we know so far is that shown in the official trailer: otters, hedgehogs, mice, and of course three striking garden birds, which you can read more about below.

Robin (Erithacus rubecula)

The short trailer gives us a clear hint that at some point in the show’s five days of episodes, the Robin will be featured. Highlighting a rather puffed up Robin, which is a mechanism of defence against cold weather, it’s great the show will hopefully go into some detail about Britain’s “National” bird.

Song thrush (Turdus philomelos)

One garden bird in serious need of bringing to the forefront is the Song thrush. According to the RSPB, the Song thrush is in serious decline, especially on farmland which has traditionally been its favourite feeding and nesting grounds. This decline has placed the bird in Red Status.

We asked our customers a simple question: have you seen a Song thrush recently? The response was magnificent, and our findings are as follows. Only 40.5% had observed a Song thrush in the recent past, while 59.5% had not. See the results below.

Waxwing (Bombycilla)

The Waxwing is a somewhat rare bird in the UK, appearing only over winter when food is scarce in places such as Scandinavia and Siberia. 2017 is unusual, though, as the like of the ITV (see article here) are calling this a “Waxwing Winter” die to the sudden influx of the bird, which is known as an irruption.
